So, I’ve been traveling a lot. I’m in the Las Vegas airport right now. I’ve visited Austin, D.C., and Tucson in quick succession. When I realized I’d been through the Denver airport two times in as many weeks, and that I couldn’t remember who lived in whatever city I happened to be in, I decided this was like Up In The Air, without the added benefit of George Clooney’s sex appeal. That means it’s probably time to stop.
Not that it hasn’t been fun. Last night, I was at the All Souls’ Procession, which is a sort of extension of the Day of the Dead, except it includes any and every religious tradition you can think of. It was very cool, and I’ll probably write about it at length when I have a moment. Which I don’t right now.
In preparation for the event, we made sugar skulls. Mine turned out kind of classical, I can’t imagine why.
I also decided I like saguaros better than people.
And I’ve still got to decide where to live. So actually, I guess this is still like Away We Go, complete with trip to Tucson.
Stay tuned.

Cool skulls! What did you do with them after you made them?
Yeah, there were a lot more and I hope to post the pics soon. After you make them you keep them as decorations, mostly. My friend is keeping mine until I find some new digs!
The travel can be mind-numbing but it’s also fun. I’m coming to enjoy more short trips in a year than those week long excursions. Beaches are nice, but I don’t want to just sit on one for 5 straight days, yet most folks think that’s the best I guess.
Yeah, I agree short trips are good. I’ve really been enjoying myself but I’ve decided I really need a home base to come back to as well, otherwise my brain feels like it’s scattered across the country.
A few questions WPE: So, are you currently on the hunt both for a place to live and a new job? What’s the status of the job search? Are you going to pick a place, settle there and network, etc., and then get down to some serious job hunting? Just curious . . .
Give the lady a cigar! Yup, the applications I sent out were preliminary feelers, but I always figured I’d pick the place then get down to it; all the advice columns suggest that getting a job is much easier when you’re ‘on the ground’ in your location. So this last week was a last hurrah before settling in somewhere and making getting a danged job my first priority, even if it’s at Starbucks.
Oh, wow, good luck deciding! I am envious of your freedom . . . it sounds so, like, American.
American, I guess, but also like something you should do when you’re twenty…though I guess we are the ‘Peter Pan’ generation.
I can’t wait to hear where you end up, and what you end up doing!
See next post — though still working on what I’m doing!
I hear ya … I am on the verge of returning from a lengthy business trip, and I have a Road Warrior Guide at the ready. Only I wish I had a few sugar skulls as souvenirs from my trip!
Any closer to choosing your city yet?
(PS–and thanks for all the great comments at Post Academic recently!)
Thanks, and yes, just chose!
