She says so, here, on her new website, and we should believe it because the prestigious New York Times reports that Kaling was a “Latin whiz” at prep school.
Also, she entered Dartmouth as a Latin major but left with a degree in playwriting.
I’m going to ignore the fact that this puts my own life choices in a seriously bad light, and focus on the positive: a new, stylish, funny, non-white, female role model for people who love Latin.

Wooohoo!! I’m so glad that she’s changing the face of people who like Latin. I enjoyed Latin at secondary school but sadly everyone who studied it risked it affecting you’re street cred – why did we think that back then??? Who knew that it had cool nerd value?
Seriously! A commenter recently pointed out that the faces of Classics are marble statues — literally old and white and usually male. And I don’t think it had nearly as much cool value till the wonderful Ms. Kaling came along

This has been a great day! 1) I believe that I successfully pulled off “color blocking” while dressing for my freshman comp classes this morning, and 2) one of my go-to bloggers remembered something I may have said. Small victories!
Man, I still can’t do color blocking, parts of me are too blocky already – so kudos on that. And it was a good point, you should repeat it often. Though that will probably tick off the old white men. An actuarial problem, as someone once said…
